Koshigaya, a city about 30 minutes from Tokyo, is set to host its first "EDO Nigiwai Market" on November 15, offering a unique blend of local produce, traditional crafts, and cultural experiences. This event, organized by ROJICOYA, aims to showcase Koshigaya's rich history and cultural heritage, making it a gateway for both domestic and international visitors.

Located approximately 25 kilometers from central Tokyo, Koshigaya played a significant role during the Edo period (1603-1868) as the third post town on the Nikko Kaido, a major road linking Edo with Nikko. As a historic post town, Koshigaya was a hub for trade and travel, with rivers and fertile farmland supporting its agricultural and craft industries.

The "EDO Nigiwai Market" will feature a variety of activities, including the chance to taste and purchase locally grown vegetables and traditional foods. Visitors can explore the art of Koshigaya daruma and hina dolls, as well as experience samurai performances, shamisen music, and even don traditional armor and try their hand at shuriken throwing.

Organized around four main themes, the market aims to provide a comprehensive experience for visitors. "Taste & Shop" will introduce attendees to the flavors of Koshigaya, allowing them to sample and purchase locally grown produce and regional specialties. "See & Shop" will highlight traditional crafts, such as Koshigaya daruma, hina dolls, samurai armor, and lightweight paulownia wood boxes, while also delving into the concept of monozukuri, emphasizing the craftsmanship behind these items.

"Watch & Listen" will feature live performances of the shamisen and dynamic samurai shows, providing a cultural experience for all. Finally, the "Armor & Shuriken Experience" will allow visitors to immerse themselves in the world of samurai and ninjas, with the opportunity to try on traditional armor and throw shuriken.

Following the November 15 event, the market is scheduled to continue approximately every three months, introducing seasonal food, crafts, and cultural experiences. Each edition will feature a different theme, ensuring visitors have multiple opportunities to explore Koshigaya's history and culture.

The market is not just limited to the initial event but is part of a larger project that aims to develop Koshigaya into a destination for tourists. Organizers hope that visitors will extend their stay beyond LakeTown, visiting local farms, workshops, and cultural sites. The project also seeks to connect tourism with local industries and cultural heritage, encouraging repeat visits and local spending.

For those intrigued by Koshigaya's history and culture, the "EDO Nigiwai Market" offers a unique opportunity to experience the city beyond its shopping destinations. Visitors can leave with a newfound appreciation for Koshigaya's rich heritage, ready to explore the city's numerous attractions and cultural sites.

The event is part of a wider initiative by ROJICOYA, which aims to develop Koshigaya as a cultural and tourist destination. By providing a platform for local farmers, craftspeople, and cultural practitioners, the project hopes to sustain and promote regional traditions.
