Furuno introduces SOLION-100 terminal for enhanced maritime safety

In a significant advancement for maritime safety, Furuno Electric Co., Ltd. has introduced the SOLION-100 terminal, which combines GMDSS, Ship Security Alert System (SSAS), and Long-Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT) functionalities in a single Iridium Certus 100 terminal. This innovation is designed to enhance safety and security for both newbuild and retrofit vessels, offering shipowners and shipyards a comprehensive solution.

The SOLION-100 terminal builds upon Iridium Communications Inc.'s Iridium GMDSS, which was recognized by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 2020 as the first new provider of satellite GMDSS services since the system's inception. Iridium GMDSS leverages Iridium's low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite network to deliver global, including polar region, maritime distress and safety communications.

The SOLION-100 terminal is designed to support crews throughout a maritime safety event. It can receive navigational and meteorological warnings through Iridium SafetyCast® and initiate distress alerts, allowing for direct Safety Voice communications with Rescue Coordination Centers. A single-button distress alert transmits the vessel's identification, status, and position, while Safety Voice enables crews to provide additional information to rescue authorities.

Furuno expects the SOLION-100 to be commercially available for retrofit applications in late 2026, with newbuild projects following in 2027. The company will showcase the SOLION-100 and other critical maritime safety services at the SMM Hamburg exhibition, where attendees can visit booth Hall B6 Stand 313.
