GOFO deploys advanced automated sorting system in Rome

2 min read1h ago

On September 1, 2026, technology-driven last-mile delivery company GOFO announced a significant upgrade to its Rome sorting center, marking the full deployment of an advanced automated narrow-belt sorting system. This upgrade, designed to enhance operational efficiency and capacity, is expected to bolster GOFO's southern Italy network, particularly during the upcoming autumn peak season.

The new system, which began trial operations in May 2026, has been in stable performance for over three months. With a design capacity of 6,500 parcels per hour and 120 sorting chutes, the automated sorter integrates singulation technology to separate overlapping parcels before they enter the sort loop. This innovation ensures consistent throughput and reliability, crucial for meeting the demands of e-commerce partners.

The sorter's mechanical separation technology, as opposed to AI-based vision recognition, offers dependable performance. Jacqueline Chan, General Manager of GOFO Italy, emphasized the importance of this investment: "The Rome hub serves as our primary gateway to southern Italy, and this upgrade ensures we can handle growing demand without compromising on speed or accuracy."

The system's capabilities extend beyond sorting, incorporating dimensioning and weighing in a single pass. It boasts volume accuracy of ±10 mm and weighing accuracy of ±20 g, further enhancing the overall efficiency of the sorting process. Currently, around 80% of the sorting process is automated, with manual handling limited to loading and exception processing.

This upgrade is part of GOFO's broader strategy to deliver high-performance last-mile solutions across southern Italy. GOFO, founded in the United States in 2023, operates nationwide through sorting centers and delivery centers. The company aims to provide precise, reliable, and scalable delivery services, powered by automated sorting, intelligent routing, and disciplined execution.

GOFO Italy currently serves a broad population across southern Italy, including cities like Bari, Catanzaro, and Naples, with the new sorter enhancing its ability to meet the needs of both merchants and consumers. The company's expansion into Italy and other European markets underscores its commitment to leveraging technology to drive efficiency and deliver trust to its customers.

As GOFO heads into the autumn peak season, the full deployment of this automated system is expected to provide the necessary reliability and processing capacity to support the increasing volume of e-commerce orders. The investment in technology will not only meet current demands but also position GOFO to handle future growth in the region.
